More than 1,000 TRUE Advisors are making a difference across the world.
TRUE is the first zero waste certification program dedicated to measuring, improving and recognizing zero waste performance by encouraging the adoption of sustainable waste management and reduction practices that contribute to positive environmental, health and economic outcomes. And as of this week, more than 1,000 TRUE Advisors across the world are helping buildings, businesses and communities achieve their zero waste goals. TRUE Advisors are trained to help projects achieve TRUE certification, are experts in supporting and implementing zero waste policies and programs and possess the knowledge necessary to divert and document waste from landfills, incineration (waste-to-energy) and the environment.
TRUE Advisors can now be found in 42 U.S. states and 37 countries, and come from a variety of professional backgrounds. Many organizations working toward TRUE certification have trained one or more TRUE Advisors on their staff in order to facilitate and often expedite the process. Cisco alone has trained more than 40 staff members to become TRUE Advisors!
“Pursuing TRUE Advisor has tremendous value whether you are actively certifying projects or not,” noted Emily Gove, TRUE Advisor and Corporate Director of Sustainability and Training for Building Maintenance Service LLC in New York, New York. “It was extremely valuable to glean strategies and tactics from TRUE to utilize in my current position. I work with commercial office tenants to hone in on ways to improve diversion rates and achieve an overall reduction in waste. TRUE is a great tool for anyone interested in best practices for recycling, organics and overall reduction!”
Particularly during COVID-19, facilities have grappled with new challenges that have arisen out of these unprecedented times. To help aid this work, GBCI launched two TRUE Safety First Pilot Credits which guide adjustments that promote health and safety above all. To further support and encourage learning, one of these Pilot Credits recognizes projects that have TRUE Advisors as a principal participant of their project team to help projects move forward.
“A TRUE Advisor is an important role. It leads the way for a practical approach to creating long-term business values by not only eliminating waste, but also focusing on restructuring production and operation,” explained Dr. Nadereh Afsharmanesh, TRUE Advisor and Vice President of Sustainability and Education at Earth Friendly Products, a carbon and water neutral cleaning product company in Cyprus, California. “It takes into consideration how our business operates in the ecological, social and economic environment.”

One of the newest members of the TRUE Advisor community is Krisztina Nemeth, a current graduate student at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC and TRUE fall intern. “The process of becoming a TRUE Advisor was low in stress but high in reward! The learning modules were easy to follow along with, allowing me to go at a pace that was convenient for my schedule and where I could absorb the information effectively. Not only do I understand the process of TRUE Certification more deeply, but I also gained many insights on applying zero waste practices in my own life,” Krisztina explained.
“Becoming a TRUE Advisor has given me the confidence and credibility to help companies understand the TRUE Rating System so they can achieve TRUE Certification. As a young, developing professional I hope to bring my TRUE knowledge to the various companies that I work for throughout my career. The fact that going zero waste is not only great for our planet, but a business’ bottom line as well, is such an attractive message to be able to and with others!”
